Hemp milk is a great alternative to dairy milk. This recipe uses one cup of hemp seeds which are rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and a multitude of other vitamins and nutrients essential to good health. The proteins found in hemp seeds are much easier to digest than the proteins found in meat or dairy products which is why if you’re working towards a plant-based diet hemp milk is an excellent replacement for dairy milk. This recipe makes about 4 cups of hemp milk with about 21 grams of protein per cup (there’s 5.3 grams of protein in one tablespoon of hemp seeds).

I always recommend people make their own milk substitutes at home instead of buying them from the store as most store bought milk substitutes (almond milk, cashew milk, hemp milk, soy milk, etc.) contain additives like xanthan gum and gellan gum which can be bad for your health and have a negative effect on digestion, and yes, even organic foods can contain these additives.

INGREDIENTS:

1 cup raw shelled hemp seeds
4 cups water
5 dates (can be substituted with 1 tablespoon raw honey)
½ teaspoon vanilla

DIRECTIONS:

Remove pits from dates and place all ingredients in high speed blender, blend until smooth.
Line strainer with cheesecloth and place over large bowl.
Pour mixture through cheesecloth and strainer into bowl (it may take a few minutes to strain).
Pour contents of bowl into large mason jar (or a couple of small mason jars) or any airtight container and refrigerate. *You may need to use a funnel for this step.

*Keeps for about a week in refrigerator.
